A NEW DEVIL'S DICTIONARY: SAMPLE 0008

Here are a half-dozen more samples from my new Devil's Dictionary of words and phrases that are (ab)used in Silicon Valley.

Heuristic - (n)
A cognitive shortcut for familiar but unconscious activities, often used to describe things of which the speaker is ignorant.

Hit a home run every time at bat - (interjection)
The expectation-laden analogy of a manager who has never watched a game or paid notice to any statistics.

Hotelling - (n)
The practice of requiring workers to dynamically schedule their use of any workspaces (desks, meeting rooms, nap pods, etc...) thus giving them more to do in exchange for lesser productivity. Balancing this decrease in productivity with the increase in opportunities for bullying and still thinking it is a good idea might require a deep understanding of statistical rules, laws, and lemmas.

Human Factors - (n)
All of the ways in which humans contribute to the performance of a complex task. Please note that, contrary to the rulings of most enquiries, these contributions are not alway deliterious.

Hustle - (n)
A dishonest or unscrupulous plan for getting money. See also, Sales.

[On a four count] Forwards: right, left, right, tap. Backwards: left, right, left, tap. Twirling right: step, turn, step, clap. Twirling left: step, turn, step, clap.
